When Wayne Nie left Yantai, China to attend college in the United States, he was fulfilling a lifelong dream of his late grandfather.
"He was a man of great wisdom who advised me that no matter my life path to always offer compassion to others," Wayne recalls.
If only his grandfather could see him now.
That's because Wayne has taken that counsel to heart and plans one day to fold humanity and kindness into his future profession as a physician.
He recently started his junior year in the College of Sciences and Health Professions as part of the NEOMED-CSUPartnership for Urban Health and credits CSU with giving him the opporutnity to flourish.
"As a freshman, I became as involved as possible in student activities; I am now a Structured Learning Assistant and provide tutoring for more than 40 students in organic chemistry," Wayne said.
"As part of the NEOMED-CSU Partnership, my cohort and I volunteer in urban health centers across the Cleveland community."
While Wayne's family is fully supportive of his educational pursuits, there is little they can provide financially.
"I couldn’t be more grateful for the generous donors who are making my education a reality," Wayne said.
Next year, he'll start medical school at NEOMED, an accomplishment he's sure would have brought a smile to his grandfather's face.
"I know [he] would be proud."
