Thank you for investing in our students. Your support is transforming lives, igniting hope and pulling dreams within reach.
College wasn’t always part of Mary Hansard’s plan—not because she lacked ability, but because life never gave her the stability to imagine it. Growing up in foster care, the future often felt uncertain. A college degree felt even further away. Until Cleveland State University opened a door she didn’t know existed.
Through the Pratt Center for Education, Mary found not just a pathway to college, but a community committed to her success. Scholarship support made it possible for her to enroll, persist, and ultimately graduate—something she once struggled to imagine.
With the help of the Mathilde Jane Gutow Endowed Fund and the Sullivan-Deckard Scholarship Opportunity Program, Mary was able to focus on learning rather than survival. Tuition assistance eased the financial burden, while wraparound support provided stability, encouragement, and accountability.
“CSU gave me a chance when I didn’t know if I could do this on my own,” Mary reflected. “The support I received made me feel like I belonged here.”
The Pratt Center’s holistic approach—combining scholarships with mentoring, academic guidance, and life-skills coaching—helped Mary build confidence alongside credentials. She didn’t just earn a degree; she gained a sense of direction and self-worth.
Today, Mary stands as a testament to what donor support makes possible. Her success is not an exception—it’s the result of intentional investment in students who have faced extraordinary barriers.
“When people invest in scholarships, they’re investing in lives,” Mary said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without that support.”
Because of donors who believe in second chances and untapped potential, students like Mary are not just opening doors—they are walking confidently through them, ready to transform their futures.
