The Galleries at East 13th Street, powered by CSU

A New Vision for the Galleries

CSU looks to renovate the ground floor of the Middough Building to establish a new home for the Galleries at CSU, bolstering our presence as a cornerstone of Cleveland’s theater district and boosting the city’s creative economy.

Located on 13th Street between Euclid and Chester Avenues, the Middough Building, which we own, serves as our arts campus, housing the Department of Art and Design, School of Film and Media Arts, and Department of Theater and Dance.

And since Playhouse Square purchased the art deco Greyhound bus terminal and surrounding properties at the intersection of Chester and 13st Street, CSU’s arts campus, with the Galleries at street level, will be a prime location for the foot traffic of theater patrons spending time in the area. We have engaged Playhouse Square and the City of Cleveland to align our plans to activate 13th Street and build a more vibrant theater district with the Galleries at CSU as an anchor.

“Playhouse Square is a national entertainment destination, and the Galleries at East 13th Street, powered by Cleveland State University, will accelerate the next phase of our shared vision for an exciting streetscape downtown, where people will enjoy a wide range of engaging theater and entertainment experiences. This project fits perfectly with plans to further develop the arts scene connecting Euclid Avenue and Chester Avenue. Playhouse Square is thrilled about this investment and looks forward to partnering with Cleveland State University as this vision comes to life.”

The current space

In the not-too-distant future

“Supporting Cleveland’s arts scene especially around Playhouse Square is a passion of ours. Cleveland State University has stepped up as a key partner to help revitalize East 13th street with a Gallery space which will serve CSU students and the community. Activating and beautifying East 13th street is necessary as developments along Euclid Ave and Chester Ave continue in earnest.  We are proud to be a lead donor to CSU’s Gallery project.”

A vibrant history, a dazzling future.

The CSU Art Gallery first opened in 1975. Located on 2307 Chester Avenue, the Galleries were joined physically with what is now the Department of Art and Design and the Department of Theatre and Dance. This space, which CSU demolished in 2011, lacked ideal conditions required by modern museums and galleries. In 2012, The 1920 historic building located at 1307 Euclid Avenue, which originally housed the Cowell and Hubbard Jewelry Company, was renovated specifically to house the Galleries, and was renamed to The Galleries at CSU. For 11 years, the Galleries was a cornerstone in the Playhouse Square District as well as the CSU Arts campus, which includes the homes of the School of Film and Media Arts, the Department of Theater and Dance, the Department of Art and Design, and the School of Music.

In June 2023, Playhouse Square ended its lease with Cleveland State University and The Galleries at CSU. Currently, there is no home for the Galleries, giving us an opportunity to envision a grand, new space to serve our students and the community.

It's what we are currently calling the Galleries at East 13th Street, powered by Cleveland State University.

Imagine the impact on CSU students and the local community for years to come.

Imagine being part of the future of the arts at CSU and in Cleveland.

Imagine this dynamic space.
